According to the so-called globalization sceptics, at the origin of the ‘hyperglobalist’ zeal is the reification of globalization as a process that necessitates an all-change transition in economic and political life and so, too, in the terms that have framed and explained social reality. Thus, Justin Rosenberg, engaging in a polemical exchange with the ‘hyperglobalist’ camp, charged the overzealous globalization theorists with being its ‘ideological amplifiers’: ‘[i]nstead of deconstructing the popular Zeitgeist, they elevated it to the role of an intellectual Weltgeist’ (2005: 7).
But, although steadfast in her belief that ‘the movement’ is capable of overcoming its cleavages, Maeckelbergh associates it primarily with anarchism while seeming rather disdainful of a far left position that advocates the need to move beyond the mere preoccupation with ‘prefigurative’ politics and the political process itself (2009: 76). In effect, Maeckelbergh indirectly bears out the endurance of entrenched ideological distinctions, thus entering the debate that I will address in the second part of this chapter.
Thus, for example, the ‘way of subjectivity’ is described as ‘[m]ore Globalization and Ideology 31 pragmatic and less ideological’, occurring ‘[o]utside grand ideologies’, while the ‘way of reason’ is ‘more political’ and ‘vanguard’ in nature (2010: 137, 87, 142, 226). Overall, according to Pleyers, ‘[a]lterglobalization has entered a new phase, more focused on obtaining concrete results than on struggling over ideas’ (2010: 249). As noted above, this contrast between ideology and ‘getting things done’ is untenable from the perspective of the neutral, inclusive approach which assumes that all political action is irrevocably tied with ideology in that ideological frameworks inform the pursuit of specific political results, while the results in turn get interpreted in light of political ideas.
