Some tapes also have a release layer. Because of the need to be applied as a continuous web and due to their general use as a bonding element of multiple adherents, tapes generally must possess a mechanically resistant carrier material with an aggressive PSA. The mechanical characteristics of the carrier material and the adhesive characteristics of the built-in or coated adhesive differ according to the end use of the product [9]. Unlike labels, tapes do not h ave a multiweb, laminate construction before use (except for their self-wound character or some special tapes).

Lamination of coils has been used as a coating method for many years. Such (adhesive) lamination of PVD and poly(vinylidene fluoride) Ālms has been carried out at 180–200°C. The manufacture and end use of protective Ālms was described in detail in Refs. [2,9,22]. Coating devices suggested for the manufacture of protective Ālms a re l isted i n Technology of P ressure-Sensitive Ad hesives a nd P roducts, Chapter 10. On the basis of their their build-up, protective Ālms can be classiĀed as adhesiveless and adhesive-coated Ālms.
