6. Production Control Trying to define what constitutes production control is often a challenge. It differs from plant to plant, from company to company, and so on. Usually, its objective is to make sure that the plant produces the proper products in the proper amounts. Most corporate information technology (IT) organizations have implemented some form of MRP, which has evolved from material requirements planning (that focused primarily on the raw materials required for production) to manufacturing resource planning (which encompasses all of the resources required by a manufacturing process).

1. Basic Regulatory Control For pressure control, temperature control, and so on, within a batch facility, simple proportional-integral-derivative (PID) loops are usually adequate. Although most such loops continue to be simple PID, a variety of enhancements are being encountered more frequently: Cascade control. Cascade is routinely applied to temperature control of vessels equipped with recirculating systems on the heat transfer medium. Flow measurements are more widely installed, which permits temperatureto-flow, pressure-to-flow, and so on, cascades to be installed.

This is quite analogous to what can occur in a home kitchen—while baking a pecan pie in the oven, the cook can be mixing the ingredients for a cherry pie. Due to the limitations of the control equipment, some early automation efforts for such processes attempted to develop a formula with logical variables to govern what actions to perform for each batch.
