Professional philosophers tend to take for granted a remarkable fact of popular life, namely, that the pre-eminent academic fame and influence of the Descartes–Kant–Nietzsche trio is matched by their popularity in the marketplace, where their books continue to sell better than those of contemporary professional philosophers. Readers of all kinds continue to be fascinated by them, but why?
